👤 Who Was Zhuge Liang?
Zhuge Liang (181–234), courtesy name Komei, was a brilliant strategist, statesman, and inventor of the Three Kingdoms period. Known as the "Sleeping Dragon", he lived in seclusion before being recruited by Liu Bei, who sought his counsel three times (Three Visits).
He proposed the Longzhong Plan, advocating a three-way power balance between Wei, Wu, and Shu, and helped secure Shu’s foundation by forming an alliance with Sun Quan. In 208 AD, he contributed to the Battle of Red Cliffs, where Cao Cao’s massive army was defeated.
As Chancellor of Shu, he reformed governance, promoted agriculture, and strengthened military strategies. After Liu Bei’s death in 223 AD, he became the kingdom’s de facto leader, guiding Liu Shan while launching five Northern Expeditions against Wei. Despite his brilliant tactics, he was outmaneuvered by Sima Yi, and logistical struggles forced retreats.
He died in 234 AD at Wuzhang Plains, still striving to unify China. Zhuge Liang was also an inventor, credited with Repeating Crossbows, Komei Lanterns, and Wooden Ox transports. Revered for his wisdom, loyalty, and diligence, he remains one of China’s most legendary historical figures.
